Key takeaways
- Discord shows no total message count for a server; Server Insights charts engagement for up to 120 days, and only on Community servers with more than 500 members.
- Discord has no owner-level export: each person requests a Data Package from User Settings > Data & Privacy, and the link arrives by email within 30 days.
- A Data Package is a ZIP of JSON files holding only the messages that person sent, not messages from other members, deleted messages or servers left long ago.
- You don't need to export anything to apply: have an estimated message count, your years of history and the number of staff accounts that post ready, and the data vendor anonymizes the records before any AI lab sees them.
01
What is Discord data, and why do AI labs and data vendors buy it?
The short answer
Discord data is the written history of a community or company server on Discord: the messages in its channels, its group chats and its direct messages. AI labs (companies that build and train AI models) and data vendors (companies that anonymize business records and package them for those labs) buy a copy because a support channel keeps customer questions and the answers from staff side by side, which shows expertise being applied to real problems.
What a Discord server records
Discord is a chat service organized into servers, each of which is a community with its own members and rules. A server is divided into channels, which are rooms for one topic such as announcements, support or feedback, and members can also write to each other in direct messages and group chats.
Many companies run a Discord server for their customers or users. Staff and moderators answer questions in the support channels, collect product feedback and announce changes, and each message is stored with its author, its channel and the exact time it was sent.
Why staff answers in a server teach an AI model something
An AI model learns by studying a very large number of examples and finding the patterns in them, and those examples are called training data. Public documentation says how a product is supposed to work, while a support channel shows what people actually get stuck on and how an expert gets them unstuck. The messages a company's own team wrote hold that expertise, even though they show just one side of each exchange.
AI labs now want to train AI agents, software that carries out a job step by step, and an agent learns a job from records of that job being done. A data vendor can turn anonymized answers into worked examples that an agent studies like an answer key. The full mechanism is in AI training data: why AI companies want your company's data.
How Discord fits into a dataset
Discord is usually one of several apps in a company's dataset, which often also includes team chat such as Slack, email and tickets. Companies are paid $100K to $2M or more per dataset, according to micro1, the data vendor we typically refer companies to. The price covers the whole dataset, not each app on its own, and what your data is worth explains what moves it.
02
Where does Discord show how much data you have?
The short answer
Discord does not show a total message count for a server. A Community server with more than 500 members gets Server Insights, which charts engagement for up to 120 days but not an all-time total. Everyone else has to estimate the count, starting from the Data Packages that staff accounts can request.
Check whether the server qualifies for Server Insights
Server Insights is Discord's dashboard of how a server is doing, and it is available only for Community servers (servers that have switched on Discord's Community features) with more than 500 members. Discord labels it an alpha feature, so it can change.
- Check that the server is a Community server and has more than 500 members.
- Use an account that holds the View Server Insights permission, which a server administrator grants.
- Open Insights from the server settings menu, or go to discord.com/developers/servers, which lists every server you can see Insights for.
- Read the Engagement charts, which show how many members are talking and which channels they use most. Pick a date range and a daily, weekly or monthly interval, and use Export CSV to save a chart.
The charts run up to 120 days back on an ordinary server. Partnered and Verified servers can see back to the day they were verified or partnered. Discord explains this in its Server Insights FAQ.
Count a floor from staff Data Packages when Insights is not available
When Insights is not available, ask the staff accounts that post the most to request their own Data Packages, as the export section describes, and count the messages in them. That number is a floor, not a total, because each package holds only the messages that one person sent.
The estimate improves with more accounts. A company can add up the staff and moderator packages and then state plainly that the real figure is higher.
03
What should you know about your Discord data before you apply?
The short answer
Have three facts ready: roughly how many messages your server holds, how many years it covers and how many accounts post for the company. They go into the data manifest, the written summary of which apps hold your records, how many years each covers and roughly how much. You don't need to run an export to find them, and applying through micro1, the data vendor we typically refer companies to, shares no data.
The message count
Discord is measured in messages, and with no official total the figure is an estimate. Give your best number, say that it is an estimate, and base it on the staff Data Packages or on Insights activity you have seen.
The years of history
The years of history run from the date the server was created, or from the oldest message still in your busiest channel. Use whichever is later if early channels were deleted.
The number of seats
Count the accounts that post for the company, such as staff and moderators, not the full public membership of the server. Customers and community members who simply chat in the server are not seats.
What you don't need to do first
You don't need to export anything to apply, and you don't need to clean or scrub an export. The data vendor anonymizes the records before anyone else sees them, and nothing moves until a lawyer-reviewed license is signed. The application, the intro call and each later step are laid out in how to sell your company's data.
04
How do you export your Discord history?
The short answer
Discord has no owner-level export of a whole server. Each person requests their own Data Package from User Settings > Data & Privacy, and Discord emails a download link within 30 days. The package holds only the messages that person sent, as JSON files organized by direct message, group chat and channel.
Who can request a Data Package
Any account whose email address is verified can request its own Data Package, and nobody can request another member's. A server owner has no special power here, so the people whose messages you want each make a request from their own account. Discord documents the process in its data request guide.
Requesting a Data Package: the steps
- Open Discord on desktop or in the browser and select the cogwheel in the lower-left corner to open User Settings.
- Choose the Data & Privacy tab and scroll to Request your data.
- Press Request Data, and in the Submit Data Request window tick the data you want. For this purpose, make sure messages are ticked.
- Press Request My Data and confirm. Discord says the package should arrive within 30 days.
- Wait for the email to the address on the account. The download link stays active for 30 days, so save the ZIP file promptly.
On mobile, tap your avatar, then the cogwheel, then Data & Privacy, then Request all of my data. Mobile offers no choice of data, so it always requests everything.
What the request involves
A request can take up to 30 days to complete, and an account cannot open a second request until the first is complete. The link goes to the email address that was on the account when the request was made, and changing the address afterward does not redirect it. Disabling or deleting the account before the link arrives cancels the request.
What is inside a Data Package
The package is a ZIP file of JSON files, a plain text format that opens in any text editor or browser. Its messages folder sorts the person's sent messages into direct messages, group messages and the channels they chatted in. Each subfolder is named with a channel ID, and one JSON file maps every channel ID to its channel name.
Inside each subfolder, one JSON file says where the messages were sent (the server ID, channel ID and channel name, or the user IDs for a direct message). A second JSON file is the transcript, and each message in it lists its message ID, its exact timestamp, its contents and a link to any attached image or file.
What a Data Package leaves out
A Data Package holds only the messages that person sent, so it never contains what other members wrote. It leaves out messages the person deleted, because Discord no longer stores them, and it leaves out customer support and Trust & Safety correspondence, which takes place outside the app.
It includes servers the person belongs to when the request is made, plus recently departed ones. A server the person left long ago may be missing.
Why bots and export tools need care
Discord's help center describes no way for an owner to export everything in a server. Third-party bots and export tools are not Discord products, so read Discord's Terms of Service before using one on a company server.

05
What stays private when Discord data is licensed?
The short answer
Each person controls their own Data Package, and the company chooses which staff accounts and channels are in scope. The data vendor replaces names and other personal details with consistent stand-ins before an AI lab sees anything. The company keeps ownership of what it licenses, and the license covers defined records for a defined use.
You choose what is in scope
Discord does not let anyone export another member's messages, so only the accounts that request a Data Package can contribute. A company can limit its scope to staff answers in public support channels and leave direct messages and private channels out. The data vendor also deletes records too sensitive to clean safely instead of anonymizing them.
Names are replaced before a lab sees them
Anonymization means replacing every detail that identifies a person, such as a username or an email address, with a stand-in that is the same every time it appears. The answers still read in order, so a lab can learn from them, but they no longer say who wrote them.
The method, including what is deleted outright and how you review samples, is in how company data is anonymized for AI training.
Ownership and payment
Licensing gives the buyer limited rights to a copy, while the company keeps ownership of the originals. The terms that matter, such as exclusivity, permitted use and deletion, are covered in data licensing. micro1 pays in full within 30 days of accepting the data, usually as a single payment.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can the owner of a Discord server download every message in it?
Not through Discord. Its help center documents no export of a whole server, and a Data Package gives each person just the messages they wrote themselves.
Does a Discord Data Package include messages other people sent?
No. Only the account owner's own sent messages are in it, grouped by direct message, group chat and channel.
How long does a Discord data request take?
Discord says up to 30 days, and an account cannot open a second request while the first is still processing. Once the email arrives, the download link works for 30 days.
Which Discord servers get Server Insights?
Only Community servers with more than 500 members, and only for accounts with the View Server Insights permission. Insights charts engagement for up to 120 days, and it shows no total message count.
Do we need to export Discord before we apply?
No. The application takes about two minutes and shares no data. You only need an estimate of your message count, your years of history and the number of accounts that post for the company, and the Data Packages are requested later, after you sign the license.
Can a deleted Discord message be recovered for a Data Package?
No. Discord stores no copy of a message the sender deleted, so it is not in the package.
What is Discord data worth to AI labs and data vendors?
Discord history is priced as part of a whole dataset rather than on its own. Companies are paid $100K to $2M or more per dataset, according to micro1, and the price depends on the years of history and how completely the records show each job. What your data is worth explains the factors.
Bottom line
Know what is in Discord, then see what it is worth
You don't need to export anything to apply. Apply in two minutes, describe your records on the intro call, and micro1, the data vendor we typically refer companies to, prices the whole dataset and sends an offer 1–2 days later.
