How to find and export your Figma data for AI training

Figma has no storage meter because paid plans list unlimited cloud storage, so you count files instead, by opening each team and folder or by listing a team's files through the REST API. Native files are exported one at a time with Main menu > File > Save local copy, which drops comments and version history. Below, you'll find what Figma data is and why AI labs and data vendors buy it, how to count your files, what to know before you apply, every export step, and what stays private.

Where the total is
No meter; count files per team folder or via the REST API
Export method

Not in a local copy
Comments and version history
Starter plan
One folder of 3 Design files; 30 days of history

Key takeaways

  • Figma shows no storage total, so the number to report is how many files your teams and folders hold, counted by hand or through the REST API.
  • Native files are exported one at a time with Main menu > File > Save local copy, and Figma documents no bulk download of native files.
  • A local copy is the file as it is today: it carries no comments or version history, and a reimported copy is not linked to the original library.
  • You don't need to export anything to apply: have your file count, years of history and seat count ready, and the data vendor anonymizes the records before any AI lab sees them.

01

What is Figma data, and why do AI labs and data vendors buy it?

The short answer

Figma data is the collection of design files a company keeps in Figma: its screens, components, layout rules, prototypes and the version history of how they changed. AI labs (companies that build and train AI models) and data vendors (companies that anonymize business records and package them for those labs) buy a copy because a design file shows the path from a rough idea to a finished interface, which screenshots of finished products cannot show.

What a Figma account records

Figma is an app where designers draw and prototype the screens of websites and software. A company's files live in teams, folders and personal drafts, and each file holds several kinds of record.

Frame
A single screen or layout, such as a checkout page, drawn from shapes, text and images.
Component
A reusable piece of design, such as a button, that appears in many frames and can be updated in one place.
Prototype flow
The links between frames that show how a person would move from one screen to the next.
Version history
The saved states of a file over time, which show how a design changed through review.
Draft
A file that is private to its creator until they move it into a shared folder.

Why design files teach an AI model something

An AI model learns by studying a very large number of examples and finding the patterns in them, and those examples are called training data. Pictures of finished apps show only the end result. A Figma file shows how the layout, spacing and components were assembled and revised, and a design system (a shared set of components and styles) shows how a company's interface rules are applied across hundreds of files.

AI labs now want to train AI agents, software that carries out a job step by step, and design is one of the jobs they target. An agent can study how designs move from exploration to shipped screens, the way it would study an answer key. The mechanism is explained in AI training data: why AI companies want your company's data.

How Figma fits into a dataset

Figma is one of several apps in a company's dataset, which usually also includes chat, email and documents. Companies are paid $100K to $2M or more per dataset, according to micro1, the data vendor we typically refer companies to. The price covers the whole dataset, not each app on its own, and what your data is worth explains what moves it.

02

Where does Figma show how much data you have?

The short answer

Figma has no storage meter, because paid plans list unlimited cloud storage, so the total is a count of files. Open each team and folder to read its file count, or list a team's files through the REST API (Figma's programming interface). For a size in GB, save a few typical files and multiply the average by the file count.

How to count your files

Figma organizes files into teams and, within them, folders. In August 2026 Figma began renaming projects to folders, so some accounts still show Projects.

  1. Sign in with an account that is a member of each team you plan to count. Organization and Enterprise plans have an All teams view that lists teams you have not joined.
  2. Open each team and each folder and write down its file count.
  3. For a large account, list the files through the REST API: GET /v1/teams/TEAM_ID/projects returns a team's projects, and GET /v1/projects/PROJECT_ID/files returns each project's files. Both need the projects:read scope. Figma has deprecated them in favor of GET /v2/teams/TEAM_ID/folders and GET /v2/folders/FOLDER_ID/files.
  4. Count drafts separately, because a draft is private to its member. Ask each member to move work files into a team folder, or to report their drafts.
  5. To estimate size, open a few typical files, choose Main menu > File > Save local copy, and multiply the average size by your file count.

The folder and API details come from Figma's files and folders guide and REST API reference. A team's ID is not available from the API, so copy it from the team page URL.

What each plan changes

How Figma plans affect finding and counting files
PlanWhat to know
StarterOne folder, holding 3 Figma Design and Sites files; 30 days of version history
Professional and OrganizationUnlimited cloud storage; full version history; Organization adds the All teams view
EnterpriseEverything above, plus centralized administration and activity logs

Why the count may miss files

A count of team folders skips drafts and any team the counting account has not joined. The API list is also limited to what the authenticated person can see, so a complete count needs an account, or several, that can reach every team.

03

What should you know about your Figma data before you apply?

The short answer

Have three facts ready: how many Figma files your company has, how many years it has used Figma and how many paid seats it holds. They go into the data manifest, the written summary of which apps hold your records, how many years each covers and roughly how much. Applying shares no data, and you don't need to run an export first.

The number of files

Report the file count, since a count is the only size Figma and its API can give you. Should you have saved a few sample .fig copies, add the estimated GB as well.

The years of history

Look at the oldest version history among your active files, or at the day your team first subscribed. Professional teams and organizations can browse a file's whole version history; Starter teams are limited to 30 days of it.

The number of seats

Count the paid seats on your plan, which means full seats, the kind that can edit files.

What you don't need to do first

You don't need to export anything to apply, and you don't need to tidy the files. The data vendor anonymizes the records before anyone else sees them, and nothing moves until a lawyer-reviewed license is signed. The application, the intro call and each later step are laid out in how to sell your company's data.

04

How do you export your Figma files?

The short answer

Open each file and choose Main menu > File > Save local copy, one file at a time. Figma saves .fig for Figma Design, with sibling formats for its other products, and documents no bulk download of native files. The copy holds the file as it is now, without comments or version history.

Who can export

Anyone with can view access can open a file and save a local copy unless the owner has restricted copying. Check this first, since a restriction hides the Save local copy option from viewers.

The steps

  1. Confirm that the files are not restricted from copying and sharing.
  2. Open a file and go to Main menu > File > Save local copy. The file type depends on the product: Figma Design gives .fig, FigJam .jam, Slides .deck, Buzz .buzz, Sites .site and Make .make.
  3. Repeat for each file. On a large account, get the list of files from the REST API first, then go through it one folder at a time.
  4. When a past state matters, open the file's version history, duplicate that version to make a new file, and save a local copy of the new file.
  5. For rendered pictures instead of native files, the API endpoint GET /v1/images/FILE_KEY returns chosen frames as JPG, PNG, SVG or PDF.

Figma describes Save local copy in its local copy guide.

What a local copy leaves out

A local copy is a snapshot of the file as it is now. It carries no comments and no version history, and a reimported copy is treated as a new file that is not linked to the original. Its components become new main components, so instances no longer receive updates from the source library.

IN THE ORIGINAL FILE One Figma Design file Layers and framesIncluded CommentsIncluded Version historyIncluded Library updatesIncluded Everything the team sees. IN ITS SAVED LOCAL COPY One Figma Design file Layers and framesIncluded CommentsNot included Version historyNot included Library updatesCut off Only the file as it is today.
The same file in both panels. Save local copy keeps the design as it stands today and drops the comments and history, and a reimported copy is no longer linked to the original library.

What the API can and cannot do

The REST API returns a JSON description of a file and rendered images, but none of its endpoints downloads a native .fig file. The two listing endpoints sit in Tier 2 of Figma's rate limits and are closed to public OAuth apps.

Why the formats may change

Figma calls .fig and its sibling formats proprietary, says they may change, and recommends against third-party tools that read them. Saved copies are best handed over soon, not stored for years.

How long an export takes

Figma gives no estimate. Because each file is saved by hand, the time grows with the number of files, so split the list among several people.

05

What stays private when Figma data is licensed?

The short answer

The company decides which folders are in scope, and drafts stay private to their members unless moved. The data vendor replaces names and other personal details with consistent stand-ins before an AI lab sees anything. The company keeps ownership of its designs, and the license covers defined files for a defined use.

You choose what is in scope

A draft belongs to one member alone, so personal experiments stay out unless that member moves them into a shared folder. A company can also leave client-specific or unreleased work out of the files it licenses, and the data vendor deletes records that are too sensitive to clean safely instead of anonymizing them.

Names are replaced before a lab sees them

Anonymization means replacing every detail that identifies a person or a company, such as a name or an email address, with a stand-in that is the same every time it appears. A design file carries these details in its text layers and in the page and frame names. The diagram shows one frame before and after.

IN THE FIGMA FILE Frame: Invoice reminder Title layer: Acme Corp invoiceis overdue Contact layer: Dana Brooks,dana@acme.com Page name: Sarah Chen / v3 review Real names, a company and an email. WHAT AN AI LAB RECEIVES Frame: Invoice reminder Title layer: Client 7 invoiceis overdue Contact layer: Contact 203,contact203@example.com Page name: Employee 14 / v3 review Same frame; the layout still reads.
The same frame in both panels. Names, the company and the email address are replaced with stand-ins, while the layout, the wording and the review stage stay as designed.

The method, including what is deleted outright and how you review samples, is in how company data is anonymized for AI training.

Ownership and payment

Licensing gives the buyer limited rights to a copy, while the company keeps ownership of the originals. Exclusivity, permitted use and deletion are covered in data licensing. micro1 pays in full within 30 days of accepting the data, usually as a single payment.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there a way to download every Figma file in one go?

Not as native files. Figma describes saving a local copy of one file at a time and offers no bulk download of native files. List your files through the REST API, then save them individually.

Are comments and old versions kept when we save a Figma file locally?

No. A local copy captures the file in its current state only. To keep an earlier state, duplicate that version into a new file and save a copy of the duplicate.

Where can we see how much space our Figma files use?

Nowhere, because Figma lists unlimited cloud storage on paid plans and has no meter. Count files, and estimate the size from a few saved samples.

Why can't we find Save local copy on some files?

The owner probably restricted copying or exporting for viewers. Ask someone with edit access to remove the restriction or to save the copy for you.

Do we need to export Figma before we apply?

No. The application takes about two minutes and shares no data. For the intro call you need a rough file count, your years of history and your seat count. The full export is needed later, when the records are transferred after you sign the license.

Can we license only some of our Figma folders?

Yes. The company chooses the folders in scope, and drafts stay private to their members unless moved into shared folders. Client work and unreleased products are common things to leave out.

What is Figma data worth to AI labs and data vendors?

Figma files are priced as part of a whole dataset, not on their own. Companies are paid $100K to $2M or more per dataset, according to micro1, and the price depends on the years of history and how completely the records show each job. What your data is worth explains the factors.

Bottom line

Know what is in Figma, then see what it is worth

You don't need to export anything to apply. Apply in two minutes, describe your records on the intro call, and micro1, the data vendor we typically refer companies to, prices the whole dataset and sends an offer 1–2 days later.
